What Is the Inpatient Unit?
You don't have to be at the end of your life to come to Foyle Hospice.
Our Inpatient Unit is a place where people with serious illness come to get the specialist care and support they need, whether that’s help managing pain, getting symptoms under control, taking a period of respite, or receiving end-of-life care surrounded by comfort and dignity.
Patients can access treatment 24 hours a day in a home-from-home environment.
Our team of specialist nurses, doctors and care staff are here around the clock, working with you and your family to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible.
The Facility
A Calm and Comfortable Environment
Foyle Hospice's Inpatient Unit is set within beautifully landscaped gardens on the banks of the River Foyle. It accommodates 9 patients in single and shared rooms, all with en-suite facilities. The unit includes multiple sitting areas, a sunroom, a jacuzzi bathroom, an interdenominational prayer room, and self-contained family apartments, so your loved ones can stay close. A visitors' kitchen and sitting room means families always have a place to rest, gather and be together.
Who Can Be Admitted to the Inpatient Unit?
Our Inpatient Unit supports people living with life-limiting illnesses. We provide care from early in a person’s illness right through to end of life, across both urban and rural communities.Â
You do not have to be in the final days of life to be admitted.

How to Access the Inpatient Unit
Admission to the Inpatient Unit is based on a full assessment of your individual needs. Here’s how to get referred.
Ask your GP, hospital consultant or district nurse to refer you to Foyle Hospice’s Inpatient Unit. They will assess your needs and complete a referral on your behalf. If you’re unsure whether you qualify, call us — our team will guide you.

You can speak to your loved one’s GP or hospital team and ask them to make a referral to our Inpatient Unit. You do not need to wait for the patient to ask. If your loved one is being discharged from hospital, the hospital palliative care team can also arrange a referral directly.
Please note: if your loved one is coming from home, ask their GP to arrange transport if they are unable to travel by car.
Referrals to the Inpatient Unit are accepted from GPs, hospital consultants, the Western Trust Palliative Care Team, and Foyle Hospice’s own Community Specialist Nursing and Day Therapy teams. Our specialist team works closely with GPs, district nurses and hospital colleagues to support timely admission and discharge.

Yes. All care in the Foyle Hospice Inpatient Unit is completely free of charge to patients and families. Foyle Hospice is a charity funded by the generosity of donors and community fundraisers.
The Foyle Hospice Inpatient Unit has nine beds, accommodating patients in single and shared rooms, all with en-suite facilities.
Yes. Admission to the Inpatient Unit requires a referral from a GP, hospital consultant, the Western Trust Palliative Care Team, or the Foyle Hospice Community Nursing or Day Therapy Team.
Yes. The Inpatient Unit has self-contained family apartments, a visitors’ kitchen and a sitting room so that family members can stay close to their loved one.
No. Foyle Hospice provides palliative care for patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses including Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and COPD.
No. Foyle Hospice supports patients at many stages of a serious illness — from symptom management and respite care through to end-of-life care. Many patients are admitted for a period and then return home.
