On 24th October 2025, Janice Kenny took on the challenge of running her first 5k along with her partner Tommy Sheerin, for the Enniskillen Spooktacular event which is held every year.
The couple decided to take on the challenge in support of Foyle Hospice, a cause that is close to so many people’s hearts and managed to raise a brilliant £745.
Janice said: “I really enjoyed it and felt like I achieved something. It was very rewarding to give something back.”
Foyle Hospice was established in Derry/Londonderry in 1985 by Dr Tom McGinley and has recently expanded its services to the southern sector, having come into effect on the 10th September 2023. Throughout the past 40 years, Foyle Hospice staff have been privileged to care for 23,000 patients and families, as they navigate their palliative care journey.
Following the death of her daughter, devoted Janice is keen to promote awareness of how vital palliative care was to their family in their time of need.
She explained: ““I think it’s very important for people to be aware that Foyle Hospice provides high quality palliative and end-of-life care, not only to patients in Derry/Londonderry, but now to people from Omagh and Fermanagh in their own homes.
“Before Foyle Hospice expanded to our area, the community nurses cared for my daughter in the comfort of her own home. She was so relaxed and was able to benefit from palliative care and also be close to her family.”
Speaking of her recent first 5k challenge, Janice said: “I would advise people who have never done anything like that before to get out of their comfort zone and get it done. Especially if it’s for a good cause, the feeling you get afterwards is amazing. We need to continue to fundraise in support of these vital services like Foyle Hospice, who are helping so many patients and families throughout our community.” 202
