A 92-year-old Derry-Londonderry woman, who is currently being treated for bowel cancer, has praised the Foyle Hospice services which she feels has transformed her life for the better.
Previously, for Isabella Williamson, the thought of being associated with a hospice was frightening. Now, Isabella looks forward to being collected by the Foyle Hospice Bus which takes her to Day Therapy, which she admits has given her a reason to get up in the morning.
Isabella said: “I thought I was managing until I was introduced to Foyle Hospice and then I realised there was another part to my life. I was a little bit apprehensive about going to Day Therapy in the beginning. However, the first day I arrived, I was nervous until I came to the door where the Nursing Assistant Arlene was standing. The warm welcome she gave me, took away every doubt I had and it was just like coming home.
“First, we had a scone and cup of tea and at lunchtime we had soup and a roll. It was like coming from my own home into another home. And it was a happy time for me.” The services of Day Therapy are available to patients who have a life-limiting diagnosis.
It provides respite for families and carers who are often providing 24-hour care for their loved one. A bus is available for patients who have transport difficulties or require assistance. Voluntary drivers bring the patients to and from their own homes to enjoy their Day Therapy sessions.
The service also offers a wide range of complementary therapies to patients that are provided by the Nursing Team and dedicated team of volunteers at Foyle Hospice.
Isabella said: “My favourite therapy is the Indian head massage, it’s so relaxing and I really look forward to it. I also love to get my hair done and my nails painted. It’s lovely to meet other people on a similar journey to you and I love to hear their stories.”
She continued: “Previously I was at home just sitting there every day on my own, as my family live in England. And all of a sudden, I was waiting for the mornings of Day Therapy to come. It has made a difference. I don’t know what we would do without it. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this. It helps so many people.”
According to Isabella, who was previously apprehensive about Foyle Hospice, now describes everyone as her family.
She said: “Everyone from the staff to the volunteers and other patients are all just so lovely. They are just like family to be honest. I know I’m old now but I have to say it has just changed my life completely!
“I often wonder how people like me would deal with their diagnosis, without the help of Foyle Hospice – there’s no comparison. I hope to God I don’t have to do without it because I would be lost now without Foyle Hospice.”
