One of those volunteers is Emmett O’Kane, a dedicated Foyle Hospice Draw Promoter whose connection to the hospice spans generations.

Growing up, Foyle Hospice was always part of family life for Emmett. Every summer, he would accompany his mother to collect her bib for the annual Female Walk/Run, while also witnessing the commitment of his late grandmother, June Dunlop, who devoted much of her time to supporting the hospice.

From volunteering in the charity shops alongside her sisters to helping with fundraising activities in local shopping centres, June’s passion for Foyle Hospice left a lasting impression.

“Growing up, Foyle Hospice was always part of family life,” Emmett explained.

Those early memories became even more significant in 2014 when Emmett’s grandfather, Hugh O’Kane, became an inpatient at Foyle Hospice and received specialist palliative care.

“At just 20 years old, it was the first time I truly saw the incredible work the hospice does,” he recalled. “The staff were so attentive and caring, the rooms were bright and welcoming, and I still remember the beautiful view of the River Foyle from his room. Most of all, I remember how highly my grandfather spoke of the nurses and the exceptional care he received.”

Following his grandfather’s death, Emmett wanted to find a way to give something back to a charity that had provided so much support to his family.

That opportunity came through another important figure in his life, his late step-grandmother, Sally Duffy, who was a Foyle Hospice Draw Promoter.

Sally encouraged Emmett to get involved by signing him up to the Weekly Draw herself. He fondly remembers watching her carefully manage her membership list, keeping track of members and celebrating weekly winners.

“She showed me just how important every contribution was and how much people enjoyed seeing winners announced each week,” he said.

Sadly, Sally passed away in 2016, but her dedication to the hospice inspired Emmett to continue her legacy.

Following in her footsteps, he became a Foyle Hospice Draw Promoter and has since built up a membership of more than 60 people.

“It’s my small way of continuing the legacy of the people who inspired me while supporting a cause that has meant so much to my family over the years,” he said.

Through the Weekly Draw, Emmett has helped raise vital funds that support the specialist care and services provided by Foyle Hospice across the North West.

He is also encouraging others to consider getting involved.

“The draw costs just £1 per week, collected monthly,” he explained. “It may seem like a small amount, but together it makes a huge difference.”
