The Day Therapy Team is a group of specially trained nurses. We provide professional palliative care, expertise and support to patients and families who attend The Day Therapy Unit.

Our Aims

The strategic objectives which have been developed by Foyle Hospice to ensure that we consistently meet our founding aim in a professional proficient and value added manner are:-

  • To deliver accessible, effective, holistic care for patients with complex advancing disease
  • To support those affected by cancer and other life limiting illnesses
  • To provide support and education whilst acting as a resource

What can I expect from a day in the Day Care Unit?

The Day Therapy Unit provides an informal environment for patients who live at home but who can benefit from the support of our experienced palliative care nursing team in the hospice.

This is a relaxed and safe environment for up to 12 patients a day, the Day Hospice is active each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout the year. In most instances, a patient will visit the Day Hospice one day a week.

What services are offered?

We offer a wide range of services that are provided by the Nursing Team and a dedicated team of volunteers.  Services provided include:

  • Art and Creative Therapies
  • Bathing Facilities
  • Hairdressing
  • Nursing Procedures
  • Complementary Therapies
  • Relaxation
  • Beauty Treatements
  • Support/Listening Ear
  • Chiropody
  • Support for Carers

Do I need to provide my own transport to and from the Day Care Unit?

We operate a bus service with trained members of staff for patients who have transport dificulties or require assistance. In addition to this service we have a team of volunteers who provide transport to and from the Hospice.

How do i access the Day Care Service?

Referrals for the Day Hospice are made to our Nursing Team and assessed on an individual basis. The family doctor is responsible for the medical care of people living at home - we always ask that the family doctor has agreed to our involvement before we accept a referral.

Hear what Shirley, a Day Care patient, had to say about her experience.

"After Sunday, it is the highlight of my week. My programme hinges around it. I plan carefully so as to be free and in the best form I can be to reap all the benefits.... I cannot recommend this service highly enough. There is nothing to fear and so much to gain."
